Students reflect on the profound impact of Dominican Republic service work

For the 20th year, Moses Brown upper school students traveled to La Romana, Dominican Republic during the first week of spring break to take part in our Medical Service trip. The program supports the El Buen Samaritano (Good Samaritan) Hospital in the area with its provision of free medical care to residents of the nearby bateys, settlements by sugar mills there. This opportunity allowed the twelve students for this year’s trip to assist doctors, translators, and other volunteers involved with the hospital.

Reflecting on her work at one of the local bateys, junior Natalya M. shared, "I feel like I learned that a small impact can make a huge difference in someone’s life."

Sophomore Constance S. reinforced the value of the work they do during the service trip. "It's important to make such an impact," she said. Constance emphasized that it was inspiring and meaningful to see the level of care the doctors and volunteers put into what they are doing, and how valuable it was to interact with the children there and to learn about their culture, while also getting a chance to practice Spanish. "I definitely want to come back," Constance added.
